If you work in an office setting where you are required to be on the telephone for a significant portion of your day, there’s a pretty good chance that you experience, or will experience, regular neck pains if you aren’t wearing a headset. Phone headsets can be very inexpensive, and they can make a world of difference to someone who is on the phone with customers, suppliers, or other business associates for a large part of the day.
If you are one of those unfortunate persons who doesn’t have a headset to work with, you have undoubtedly run into numerous situations where you are forced to wedge the phone between your ear and your shoulder to secure it, while you are using your hands for other purposes.
There are many reasons why you might need your hands for other purposes, including looking up information, writing down information, etc. and that’s the whole point of having a headset in the first place – to make it a hands-free session on the phone. However, if you just can’t convince your boss to spring for phone headsets to help yourself and other operators out a little, there are a few things you can do which will mitigate the discomfort you feel from head and neck contortions you go through on your phone all day.
Keep Posture in Mind
It’s simple to gradually begin to lean forward during most of your calls, as you stare at the computer screen to find the needed information during your call. While this might make it easier to read the screen, it can cause a lot of stress on your neck muscles. If the reason you’re having difficulty reading the screen is related to your eyesight, make sure you get your eyes checked.
If some of the websites which you typically look at during the day, or whatever information it is that you usually stare at on your screen, is excessively small and hard to read, you do have the ability to make it bigger. By holding down the control button and hitting the + key, you will cause information on the screen to be zoomed in and enlarged, making for much more comfortable reading.
It’s also a good idea to make a conscious effort to sit straight in your chair and throw back your shoulders so that you don’t get in the habit of hunching forward. That kind of balled-up posture can also strain a great many muscle groups in your body, and contribute to your tired feeling at the end of the day.
Make Sure to Include Breaks
Everyone has busy days, and there may be times when yours gets a little out of hand, possibly even a bit frantic. But there should always be time to include a break now and then, so you can get up and stretch your legs, and relax the muscles of your neck and shoulders, preventing them from becoming fixed in position and all tensed up. No matter how busy you get, you need to make time for yourself, so that you can break the cycle of being locked into your seat, getting tighter and tighter as the day goes on.
You spend at least a third of your day and probably half of your waking hours, seated at your workstation, in more or less the same position. That makes it extremely important that you make whatever adjustments are necessary to your workstation to achieve maximum ergonomic benefit to yourself, and less stress on the muscles of your body.
Some things you can do in this regard are to adjust your chair so that when looking at your terminal, you see things at eye level. Doing so will avoid the necessity of having to look up or down, thereby causing undue strain on your neck muscles. Keep your feet flat on the floor, in a comfortable position, and make sure your arms are within reach of your keyboard, while at the same time resting comfortably on armrests which are adjustable.
Anything else you can do to your workstation which will make it more amenable to accomplishing your work in the most comfortable way possible will be worth your while.
